17 U.S.C. § 109 (2007)
Section 109 of the Copyright Act, commonly referred to as the First Sale Doctrine, states that a copyright holder can control the initial distribution of a copyrighted work, but that any subsequent lawful owner of that work may dispose of it however he or she chooses.
