This publication studies the only book Rubens published, solely handling its production and distribution. The etchings were made after drawings of the palaces he had collected..
The original drawings were kept by Rubens until his death, then sold from the estate in 1657.
Most are now at RIBA, London (publication of this volume allows a fresh view of them).
The material was presented in two series:
Palazzi antichi (cat.1-72). and Palazzi moderni, (cat. 73-139).
Entries have a Letter for catalogue desigination, and give name of palace, bibliographic references, dimensions, inscriptions, scale, trim note, ill. ref. numbers,, and have long commentaries with copius footnotes.
The first series is the most detailed, giving a complete depiction of the palaces with layout, plans, elevations, everything from stately rooms to servants' quarters.
The preface by Rubens contains his only published coherent published text on the issues of art and theory.
There are three appemdices with contemporary documents.
Individual Entries Contain:
Bibliog.; Comments
Public Note:
This volume is the first part of five in the series covering "Architecture and Architectural Sculpture" (XXII, 1).
