Projected in over 164 volumes, the late Walter Strauss began this project to illustrate and update the classic, but unillustrated, study of European painter-printmakers by Adam von Bartsch. In addition the new illustrated volumes (called Picture Atlas volumes), new critical information is published in the Supplementary and Commentary volumes (authors vary).

Sets may be located in major reference libraries. ARTstor also offers some 50,000 images of the "Illustrated Bartsch Collection", via its subscription service. Eventually, ARTstor intends to offer the accompanying texts as well.
