Rubens' study heads (approximately 136 have been identified) provided an important "database" of study pieces, which could be incorporated into multiple works.

The publication aims to reconstruct the drawings in their original appearance, using the evidence of copies and new technical research.
Public Note:
This volume catalogues "Study Heads" originally designated by Ludwig Burchard, as well as additional studies by members of Rubens' workshop, including Van Dyck and Jordaens.

Rubens kept these studies or "tronies" together for his and his assistants' use until his death.
