This case pitted two Jewish art collecting families against each other over title to L'Anse des Pilotes, après-midi, temps ensoleillé, Le Havre (“L'Anse des Pilotes, Le Havre”), a 1903 painting by Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro. The descendants of Margaret and Ludwig Kainer sued the Atlanta-based Horowitz Family Foundation in the spring of 2021, claiming that the Nazis looted the painting during the Holocaust and subsequently sold it at a special auction for disposal of the assets belonging to Jewish victims.
