Précis

In December 1936, Stern and her family were forced to flee Germany due to the 1935 Nuremberg Laws and eventually settled in Berkley, California, where she lived until her death in 1983. Stern was prevented from taking any of her property with her as a result of the Gestapo’s orders to prevent export of her belongings, including Olive Picking and other artworks.
